These Terms of Use govern your access to and use of the AHDRC website and the archive of classical sub-Saharan African material heritage that it contains. Please read them carefully.
1. Acceptance
By accessing ahdrc.org, by registering an account, or by using any part of the AHDRC archive, you agree to be bound by these Terms of Use. If you do not accept them, please refrain from using the website.
2. Mission and permitted use
AHDRC is committed to providing broad access to the database for teaching, learning, research and other non-commercial purposes of scholarship. You may consult, search, download for personal study and cite materials in academic work, provided that AHDRC is properly credited.
Commercial use of any kind, including resale, redistribution, integration into a paid product, or use in advertising, requires our prior written permission.
3. Accounts
You are responsible for keeping your credentials confidential and for all activity that takes place under your account. You must notify us promptly of any unauthorised access. We strongly recommend enabling two-factor authentication.
Accounts are personal. You may not share access with third parties or use automated agents to retrieve material from the archive.
4. Intellectual property
AHDRC does not always hold the copyright to the materials presented in the archive. Where copyright belongs to a third party, AHDRC cannot grant or deny permission to use those materials. You are solely responsible for determining the copyright status of any item you wish to reuse, identifying the rights holder, and obtaining permission where required.
Database structure, descriptive metadata, editorial commentary, the website design and the AHDRC name and logo remain the property of AHDRC and are protected by copyright and trademark law.
5. Submissions
If you submit material (images, identifications, corrections, biographical entries) to AHDRC, you confirm that you have the right to do so and you grant AHDRC a non-exclusive, royalty-free, worldwide licence to use that material within the archive and in related scholarly publications, with appropriate credit.
6. Acceptable behaviour
You agree not to: scrape or systematically copy the archive; circumvent technical protections such as image-saving controls or watermarks; impersonate another user; upload content that is unlawful, defamatory or infringing; or interfere with the operation of the website.
7. Subscriptions and payment
Paid subscriptions grant access to the archive for the duration purchased. Subscriptions may renew automatically; you can cancel renewal at any time from your account. Refunds are handled in accordance with Belgian consumer protection law.
8. Suspension and termination
We may suspend or terminate accounts that breach these Terms, that compromise the security of the platform, or that are used in a manner inconsistent with our scholarly mission. Where possible we will give prior notice; in clear cases of abuse, we may act immediately.
9. Disclaimers
AHDRC does not warrant that use of any material displayed on the website will not infringe the rights of third parties. The website and its contents are provided on an "as is" basis. See the Disclaimer page for the full statement.
10. Governing law
These Terms are governed by the laws of Belgium. Any dispute arising out of or in connection with the website that cannot be settled amicably will be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of Brussels.
11. Changes
We may revise these Terms from time to time. The current version will always be available on this page. Continued use of the website after a revision constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms.
